The Danish company’s solution reduces the carbon footprint of electricity generation by enabling the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid and reducing the need for fossil fuel-based peak power plants.
Nefco, the Nordic Green Bank, has signed a loan agreement with S.C. Nordic. The financing will support the Danish company’s international expansion and sales of its grid-balancing services to transmission system operators (TSOs) in other Nordic countries.
Electricity consumption in the European Union is projected to increase by over 60% by 2050, and effective grid-balancing services will therefore become increasingly important to ensure stability in the electricity grid, a trend that will be further amplified by the growth of renewable energy sources. Grid-balancing services help coordinate electricity generation and consumption to stabilise the grid.
By partnering with S.C. Nordic, small and medium-sized companies across all sectors that own small machinery or equipment connected to the national power grid can contribute to the grid-balancing market – a role previously limited to large companies. This allows them to earn additional revenue from existing equipment while contributing to environmental sustainability. The solution is sector agnostic and capable of aggregating numerous small devices that, individually, might seem insignificant but collectively make a meaningful impact.
S.C. Nordic’s innovative solution ensures a seamless balance between electricity supply and demand, which is critical for the uninterrupted operation of the power grid. It facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources by addressing the large supply fluctuations caused by intermittent electricity generation from renewables, such as solar and wind. This is achieved by coordinating the responses of numerous small assets, working together in a synchronised and efficient manner. Additionally, S.C. Nordic’s solution reduces reliance on peak power plants, which are often fossil fuel-based, thereby significantly lowering the overall carbon footprint of electricity generation.
“We are very happy about our collaboration with S.C. Nordic. Grid-balancing solutions are essential for the decarbonisation and electrification of various industries and needed to accelerate the green transition,” commented Bo Eske Nyhus, Investment Director, Nefco.
Headquartered in Northern Denmark, S.C. Nordic currently works with EnergiNet, the Danish TSO, and currently has over 75 completed projects with a total regulation capacity of 50 MW. With financing from Nefco, S.C. Nordic is ready to expand and provide essential grid-balancing services to TSOs outside Denmark and is currently introducing its solutions on the Swedish market.
“This financing from Nefco is important for our growth. Our aim is to scale up our presence by offering our technology to other utilities across Europe and strengthen our position as a strategic partner. Our internationalisation began with expansion to Sweden and will move into other Nordic markets in the future. We aim to leverage the same operational platform to enhance grid-balancing services across the region,” stated Mogens Birkelund, CEO, S.C. Nordic.
