The Finnish Association of Science Editors and Journalists has awarded Senior Adviser Anja Nystén at NEFCO for her communications work, which highlights the effects of chemical substances on everyday life. Nystén keeps a blog called Kemikaalikimara and has published two books related to the abundance of chemical compounds and their impact on the environment and human health.

“From a consumer’s point of view, it’s still very hard to find relevant and understandable information about chemicals. The information shared is still dominated by that of state authorities, and the substance is often overly technical and difficult to comprehend,” says Anja Nystén.

The Jury concluded that “Anja Nystén provides well-grounded information on chemicals that can be found in for example textiles, toys, furnishing materials, household chemicals, food and cosmetics. Nystén raises concerns when necessary and presents hard facts in a calm and knowledgeable manner to confront speculation and rumours. She is an advocate for ordinary people and through her writings she has contributed to a situation where the cosmetics industry in Finland is now operating in a more transparent and accountable manner.”

Anja Nystén is an engineer by education. She is currently working as an environmental specialist at NEFCO where her work includes analysing the emission reduction potential and environmental effects of projects financed by her employer.

“We are delighted and honoured to have such a good communicator in our team of experts,” said Communications Manager Mikael Sjövall from NEFCO.

The Finnish Association of Science Editors and Journalists (FASEJ) is a national organisation of professionals involved in science communications. The purpose of the organisation is to promote science communication activities as well as the exchange of science information, not only within the scientific community but also in society as a whole.
